I played semi pro football for 2.5 season with the Charlestown Townies, in the Eastern Football League. I was #99, the long haired kicker. I tied a league record in my first game by hitting 6 consecutive extra points in a game. In my final game on the team, I set a new league record by hitting 7 extra points. I was hitting 55 yards field goals fairly regularly in practice, but the times when we had the chances for a field goal, our coach went for a first down or a touchdown instead, so I was never given the opportunity to take a field goal. That also meant that to be a part of the action, I would kick off and then run to try to tackle the guy that picked up the ball. I did so in my second game and knocked the guy out of bounds at the 12 yard line. My team cheered. Their team plotted revenge. The next kick off, I took about 20 steps before two of the biggest, meanest men I had ever encountered knocked the living crap out of me. I got the wind knocked out of me, and while trying to remember how to breathe, so I could stay alive, they both looked down and said, "don't do that again, boy!" I didn't.
